6/29/2026 – Heat Wave Alert for Fig Growers!

For those of us in the Northeast, the forecast for the next 10 days is calling for hot daytime temperatures, warm nights, and very little rain. I won’t even mention the fact that just a few months ago, we had a very cold winter.

Your fig trees are going to be working overtime. During hot weather, they lose a tremendous amount of moisture through their leaves, and when nighttime temperatures stay high, they don’t get the chance to recover from the day’s heat stress.

This is the time to water your fig trees every day.

Deep, consistent watering helps:

  • Reduce heat stress
  • Keep leaves healthy and productive
  • Prevent young figs from dropping prematurely
  • Support steady fruit development and sizing
  • Maintain overall tree vigor during prolonged hot spells

A thirsty fig tree will often slow its growth to conserve water. In severe cases, it may drop leaves or fruit to survive. Giving your tree a deep drink now helps it stay focused on producing a healthy crop instead of merely coping with the heat.

Water deeply at the base of the tree, preferably early in the morning or in the evening, so more moisture reaches the roots instead of evaporating in the midday sun. Watering a plant in the middle of the day results in more water being lost to evaporation. A layer of mulch around the tree will also help conserve soil moisture and keep the roots cooler.

Your fig trees will reward you with healthier growth and sweeter, better-quality fruit.
