Do as I tell you, but not as I do

In late fall I take cuttings from my trees that I grow in my backyard. During the winter, I root these cuttings, and by early spring, they’re ready to be shared with fellow fig enthusiasts.

One of my favorite trees grows to an impressive 7–8 feet and produces an abundance of purplish figs every year. Because of its remarkable productivity, I’ve nicknamed it Unknown Prolific.

When rooting cuttings, it’s generally a good practice to remove any figs that start to grow. This is because the cutting will divert energy into growing the fig rather than developing strong roots, which is the priority at this stage.

However, this year, one of my Unknown Prolific cuttings surprised me by growing not one but two figs! I couldn’t help but feel tickled pink when I saw them. Against my usual advice—and without a second thought—I decided to leave both figs intact.

As fate would have it, one of my customers recently slipped on ice and had to reschedule our meeting. To brighten her day and wish her a speedy recovery, I’ve decided to give her this special cutting as a little “get well soon” surprise. It’s my way of sharing a bit of joy and the magic of figs!
