My Ever Growing Fig Collection

I grow figs because they take me back to the village of Avlonari, Greece, where, as a child, I would climb enormous fig trees and devour their fruit.

I have 10 raised beds and a healthy scattering of planted fig trees. Recently, I added a few new varieties: two Red Lebanese from the Beqaa Valley, one Violette de Bordeaux (also known as Negronne), a variety that dates back to 16th-century France, and one Petite Negra (also known as Little Black Fig), which grows to just 4–6 feet tall. I have high hopes for this tree because, in its very first year, it produced several figs—and they were (in Oprah’s voice) DELICIOUS!
