Fig Cuttings

Red Lebanese Cuttings

Cloning a fig tree using fig cuttings is my favorite cloning method. I take cuttings from my fig trees every fall after the tree goes dormant. Every year I enhance my collection of figs by purchasing new cuttings. I use two sources for my purchases: Fig Bid and Etsy.

You can buy any of the following types of cuttings: green, partially lignified or lignified. Purchasing green cuttings is a bit problematic because of the fact that these cuttings do not store well. Perhaps if the the seller sends you fresh cuttings AND they get overnighted to you AND you begin the process immediately after you receive them, the cuttings, there is a good chance that they will root well.

On the other hand when you try to root a lignified cutting there is good chance that it will be a successful operation, do why risk it and buy green cuttings?

Regarding green cuttings, I root them all the time, BUT I don’t buy them, I take these cuttings myself (Ref 1, Ref 2, Ref 3, Ref 4) while visiting friends and relatives in various states. I always have access to a pair of pruners and I snip away. The problem I have with these cuttings is that they are always an unknown variety. Ach!
