When the Fig Gods Smile at the Supermarket

I love to shop at this chain of local supermarkets, Adams Fairacre Farms, a beloved local destination for quality and variety. I appreciate that they’re not expanding nationwide, because their brand and business are rooted in serving local Hudson Valley communities with fresh, locally sourced products rather than large-scale expansion.
Each store has a hidden corner where they sell products at greatly reduced prices and I always swing by to check for something “special”.

Well, today I hit the jackpot! Adams in Middletown had a container of figs marked down to just 99¢. I couldn’t pass that up. As soon as I brought them home, I gave them a good wash and wasted no time sampling a few. I tried three right away, just to be sure.

In the image below I used a knife to peel the skin off one of the figs. That’s how I used to eat them back in the day in Greece. Simply score the skin lightly with the knife, gently pinch it, and slowly pull it away from the flesh. It works surprisingly well, and you might want to give it a try yourself.

The figs were perfectly ripe and tasted very good, sweet, soft, and satisfying. The container didn’t list the variety, but honestly, that didn’t matter one bit. A good fig is a good fig!
