The Making of my Figgy Farm

In June of 2025, I decided to buy a structure that would better support my ongoing fig cultivation efforts. Choosing the right type of structure, however, was no easy task.

At first, I considered a traditional greenhouse. But after some thought, I realized it wouldn’t be the best fit for my needs. Living in Zone 6b, a greenhouse would require consistent heating from November through March, and with all those windows, much of that heat would quickly escape through the sides and roof.

In the end, a well-built shed proved to be a more practical—and efficient—choice. The shed I selected measures 12′ by 16′, is fully insulated, and sits securely on a solid pad. It features four windows on the southern side to capture ample sunlight and a double door on the eastern side for easy access.

Right now, I’m focused on reinforcing the exterior foundation to prevent small animals from burrowing underneath and making it their home.

For anyone interested, I’m happy to share the contact information of the company that built my shed. Please note that I’m not profiting in any way from this recommendation, it’s simply a genuine endorsement based on a very positive experience.

Full disclosure: The entire process of choosing the shed’s size, exterior colors, and design features was truly a collaborative effort guided by my neighbors, their adorable dog, my wife, and (I’ll admit) just a tiny bit by me.

The shed arrived on this flexible trailer.

In this photo, you can see the pad ready and waiting to welcome the new shed—a solid foundation for many fig-growing adventures to come.

Yes, the trailer actually has extra wheels that let you shift the entire load side to side—and the best part is, you can do it all with a remote control!

Here we have the exact moment where the shed becomes part of the Figgy Farm.

I had envisioned the shed being installed as early as June or July, but, as is often the case, village, town, and county bureaucracy had its own schedule in mind. Nonetheless, the shed is here and I am moving forward with the interior structure design and of course, all in good health.
