The title is a quote from movie Being There.
Two nights ago, an online frost warning went out, and, always one to play it safe, I covered my nine planted fig trees with my concrete curing blankets. I wasn’t taking any chances, even though the temperature never dipped below 40°F—no complaints here, though! It’s always better to be cautious, especially when it comes to my beloved figgies. The next day, I had a busy schedule preparing for a fig cultivation program I was offering at the Monroe Free Library. With my head buried in preparations and no time to spare, I didn’t get around to removing all the coverings.
By the time I finally had a free moment, the following day, I spent a little extra time rolling up those heavy blankets and tucking them neatly away in the shed. And let me tell you, after that effort, I am firmly declaring: it better not get cold again anytime soon!
On top of that, I’ve got about 30+ potted figs—each one growing so beautifully that I’m half considering adopting a few more. But my planted figgies, they were still all sound asleep, completely unbothered by the world around them. There’s a Greek proverb I can’t help but think of, Άνδρα θέλω τώρα τονε θέλω—loosely translating to, “I want a husband, and I want him now,” which is just the perfect metaphor for my impatience. It’s all about wanting something, and wanting it right now.
With that in mind, I found myself obsessively checking my planted figs after I uncovered them. They were getting a very diluted water-soluble fertilizer bath every so often. It was like watching a pot boil—agonizingly slow. But then, then, it happened. My heart nearly skipped a beat when I spotted a glimmer of green on my two Red Lebanese fig trees. I started looking around, and to my absolute delight, nearly all my planted figgies had tiny leaves and branches starting to emerge. There it was, the sweet sign of life returning! A gardener’s version of winning the lottery.
Now, it’s just a matter of sitting back, hoping for no more surprises, and watching these little beauties grow.

I made a YouTube short in such a frantic rush the other day, and let’s just say it was a classic case of “haste makes waste.” In my mad scramble, I somehow managed to film the whole thing holding my iPhone in landscape mode instead of portrait—classic rookie move—and now it’s a complete disaster. The video barely shows anything worth watching! The framing is all off, the visuals are squished, and you can hardly make out what I’m trying to explain. Whoops. Not exactly the most graceful moment in my content-creating journey. But hey, lesson learned.
