I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read people’s posts on social media saying they can’t winterize their potted fig(s) because they don’t have a garage, cellar, or shed. My answer is always the same: keep it simple and get a little creative!
Take a look at this photo I snapped of the side of our house here in Zone 6b, Orange County, New York.

That little strip right up against the foundation, nothing fancy, just a narrow space with a tiny overhang from above, stays surprisingly warm and protected all winter long. And you know what? You can fit several potted trees there without any issue. Am I right, or am I right?
Here’s how easy it is:
Step 1: Give your potted fig a good prune.
Step 2: Mound some extra soil around the base of the trunk for insulation.
Step 3: Cover the whole fig—tree and pot—with a tarp.
Step 4: Done!
Just remember: your potted fig will still need a little care. Give it a small drink of water about once a month to keep those roots alive and happy through the cold season. That’s it—simple, effective, and no garage required!
