Monitoring Fig Trees After Winter Protection

We’ve officially said adiós to the cold, snowy days and endless winter nights, and now the fig trees are beginning to awaken from their long seasonal slumber. One by one, the in-ground figs are showing signs of life by showing tiny buds swelling and the promise of a new growing season unfolding before our eyes.

There’s something magical about this time of year. After months of winter protection, uncertainty, and patience, the garden slowly comes back to life. Every waking fig tree feels like a small victory.

Now comes the rewarding part: looking forward to delicious homegrown figgies, lush new growth, and, of course, plenty of sweet cuttings for rooting and sharing. Spring has arrived, and the fig season has officially begun.

HOWEVER, I apologize for the wonderfully hideous way I marked the new growth in the following four images. Let’s just say that professional photo editing is not currently one of my strengths.

It’s the beginning of May, and I already have high hopes for the abundance of fruit these trees will produce this season. The fig garden is slowly coming alive, and each newly awakened fig tree feels like a promise of sweet rewards to come.

I’m still waiting for the Violette de Bordeaux and Brown Turkey trees to wake from their winter nap, but it’s still early in the season—so let’s give these sleepy beauties a little grace. Some fig trees simply enjoy making a dramatic entrance.
